2011 U16 Youth Girls State Championships
Crusader Girls 4th – 6th November

The annual U16 Youth Girls State Championships were held at North Cairns football oval from 4th – 6th November 2011. The students taking part in the championships were selected from the annual Chris Johnson & Angie Nadredre Cup held in NPA earlier in the year. The Crusader team consisted of girls from NPA, Thursday Island, Outer Islands, Lockhart River, and Djarragun students.

The Crusader team assembled on Wednesday afternoon and watched the new competition, AFL 9’s, at Cazaly’s stadium, supporting the AFL Cape York King Browns team while enjoying some pizza.

Once this was all over the team headed to Holloways Beach for the camp. The first training session was held the following morning at the North Cairns football oval. The girls then had a long and hectic day ahead of them.

After lunch the girls all headed to their first industry tour with Coles at Cairns Central and met with ‘Topaz,’ the tour guide. Students took part in tours through different departments and were very ‘hands on’ doing different things, from making donuts to wrapping meats. Students were given free gifts with assistance from the ‘prices-are-down’ hand.

From there, we toured the Mercure Inn and met with David who showed us around the hotel including the kitchen, laundry and the different styles of rooms. The students were put though a fun Masterchef competition making wraps.

There were speeches from Matt Travett Lyall, Qantas, Graham Ross, and the Mercure Inn and each discussed the different opportunities available within their industry. The students gained an enormous amount of insight and knowledge from the tour. That night we went and had a game of golf at the Cairns Golf Centre.

On Friday 4th November we started with a morning walk on the beach and stretches, and then headed to the North Cairns oval to train and back to Holloways to have lunch and prepare for the girls first game against Brisbane.

We arrived at North Cairns oval and met up with the other teams from Brisbane, Southern Stars and North Queensland to attend an educational presentation from Queensland Health on smoking.

The Crusader girls were excited for their first game; they went in hard and had a lot of fun. They were defeated by Brisbane and played another game straight after against Central Coast. Afterwards the teams attended the carnival BBQ at the oval then headed for a recovery session at the lagoon.

The next day was a very busy day again with our first game at 9.00am against North Queensland and then we headed to the lagoon for recovery and free time. There was a lot of laughter amongst the group and we ended the day with a dance at Holloways Beach camp.

Congratulations to Kathy Loban and Rowena Tabaui who won the MVP medal, and Millie Stephen and Kathy Loban for the All Stars selection.

Overall the Crusader Girls had a great experience throughout the games, making new friends with their opposition, and gained a lot from the industry tours.

A big thank you to Angie Nadredre (Coach), Laura Martin (Assistant Coach) Tammy Collins (Water), Jonathan Foley (Runner), and Malita Sagaukaz (Manager) for their assistance throughout the camp.

haganThree Queenslanders have been chosen in the Australian U15 Indigenous Flying Boomerangs squad ahead of the Oceania Cup in Fiji in December.

Sixteen-year-old Isaac Rokeby and 15-year-old Joel Hagan and Zenray Nona are among a 30-player group that will be cut to 25 prior to the championships.

They were members of the Queensland U15 Indigenous side, coached by ex-Brisbane Lions ace Darryl White, which played in the recent Kickstart U15 Championships on the Gold Coast

Rokeby (pictured middle left), currently boarding at Djarragun College in Gordonvale, 30 minutes south of Cairns, rockbyis originally from Weipa and is a former Brisbane Broncos scholarship holder in his first season in the AFL.

Winner of the Queensland Most Valuable Player award at the Kickstart Championships, he was part of the Queensland U16 side this year and is part of the Rookie Search program.

Nona (pictured left), also boarding at Djarragun College, is originally from Badu Island in Torres Strait. He also plays rugby league as a second winter sport.

nonaHagan (pictured top left), who boards at Nudgee College in Brisbane, is part of the Brisbane Lions Academy.

Born in Toowoomba but now making his home in Cunnamulla, he comes from an athletics background, and at age 13 was ranked No.1 in the country over 100m and No.2 over 200m.

He also plays rugby league and rugby union.

U15 Chris Johnson Cup (Boys) / U16 Angie Nadredre Cup (Girls)

In October, AFL Cape York held its annual U15 Chris Johnson Cup (Boys) and the U16 Angie Nadredre Cup (Girls) at the home of AFL in the Cape - New Mapoon Oval.
AFL Cape York headed up in vehicle convoy with 31 Djarragun students - girls and boys, to compete against Tagai College and NPA College/Aurukun students for the Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre Cups. The AFL Cape York staff and Djarragun team departed early Monday morning on the 10th of October for a big day of travel on the road, arriving to meet the ever so friendly Jamie and Gayle at Bramwell Station Roadhouse and set up camp for the night. We set off early the next morning and arrived in Bamaga at lunchtime on Tuesday 11th of October. After a short trip to Pajinka – ‘The Tip’ for an amazing experience, it was back to the NPA College to set up accommodation for the night. At 5.30pm the team headed to New Mapoon to assist AFL Cape York Senior Development Officer Marc Harbrow with his ‘No School No Play’ carnival which was arranged for local students who have been attending school. It was a fantastic event; well organised and well supported by the NPA Communities, especially the New Mapoon Community who assisted in cooking the BBQ for all involved on the night. The ‘No School No Play’ event also gave the Djarragun students a chance to assist AFL Cape York and the local children with umpiring and preparing food, etc.
After a sleep and some breakfast and clean-up of the school, the students headed to the home of AFL in the Cape- New Mapoon- to meet the students from Tagai (Thursday Island), NPA college and Aurukun for the opening Ceremony and the start of the two Cups.
Some highlights of the U16 Angie Nadredre Cup (Girls) consisted of Djarragun College v Tagai College which was a close game and saw some big hits being made. NPA College girls defeated Tagai which set up a thrilling Grand Final against Djarragun in the final game of the day. Djarragun College came from behind in the second half, against the wind, to win by 10 points.
MVP medal winner for the Angie Nadredre Cup, presented by Angie Nadredre, went to Djarragun College player Shandel Sam who showed fantastic skills, speed and attack on the ball.
In the U15 Chris Johnson Cup Djarragun showed class and game knowledge, however Tagai and NPA/Aurukun showed flashes of brilliance and talent. Djarragun College came through undefeated in the end and took home the 2011 Chris Johnson Cup.
The MVP for the Chris Johnson Cup was presented by the three time Brisbane Lions Premiership player Chris Johnson to the exciting forward Djarragun Student Jawa Guligo, who kicked 10 goals in two games and showed excellent hands in the air and read the ball well. Johnno said “Jawa had a fantastic read on the game and had attributes of an AFL footballer but needs to improve his fitness, work rate and intensity in games.”

At the conclusion of the closing ceremony the AFL Cape York convoy travelled on to the dusty road heading back to Bramwell Station, but not before the annual swim at Fruit Bat Falls. A fantastic meal was awaiting us at the Station, prepared by Jamie and Gayle and a short leadership discussion followed. The next morning the students were up early packing up camp before departing on the long haul back to Cairns.
AFL Cape York prides itself on providing an overall experience using the great Australian game of AFL as a vehicle to work with young people on life choices. A major part of the experience is about emphasising leadership and working hard at school to gain an education and hopefully set them up for a long and healthy life.
The Djarragun students were a pleasure to have on the trip and conducted themselves in a fantastic manner.
A big thank you goes out to the New Mapoon council for preparing the oval in the best condition we have seen it in thus far, and to Nathan Campbell for providing a fantastic atmosphere by mixing some great music while the students were playing their AFL, both during the ‘No School No Play’ carnival on Tuesday and the two Cups on Wednesday. A big thankyou also goes out to all staff, and students of colleges involved, for preparing teams with no fuss and especially NPA College and John Foley for the support in providing accommodation for the Djarragun Students and AFL Cape York Staff. Thank you to Chris Johnson and his son Preston for travelling up for the climate change from Melbourne and Angie Nadredre for her continued assistance up in the NPA region.

U13 Torres Strait/NPA Crusader Cup
August 10th-11th 2011

The U13 Torres Strait/NPA Crusader Cup kicked off well with 7 teams participating in the annual carnival. School teams from Mer Island, Darnley Island, Kubin, Mabuiag Island, Badu Island, Horn Island, Thursday Island and the Northern Peninsula Area participated in round robin matches played at Tagai College Thursday Island Primary Campus on August 10th-11th 2011.

The young, skilled athletes brought loads of energy to the carnival and made a show for onlookers around the ground. It was great to see the finesse of the young warriors from the outer islands, their ability to evade opposition at full speed was exciting to see. Mabuiag Island product John-Will Gizu had very little to say but spoke louder with talented actions on the field.

Students are selected to attend the event based on their level of school attendance, overall behavior and participation in scheduled training sessions. AFL Cape York is very focused on complimenting schools expectations and endeavors to reward students meeting these criteria.

AFL Cape York is very much appreciative of the many involved in making the carnival a success – Tagai Colleges, NPA College, Peddells Ferry, McDonalds Ferry, Westwing Aviation, 4MW T.I Torres Strait Radio, Active After Schools Community Program, IBIS Café T.I, IBIS Supermarket T.I, T.I Bulk Meats, T.I Army Base, Chris Conlon AASC Area Manager.

The carnival is also used to select two U13 teams consisting of 12 & 13 year olds to attend and compete at the U13 Crusader Cup Championships in Weipa September 5th-7th 2011 and an U11 Development squad consisting of 10 & 11 year olds to attend the U11 Development Camp in Weipa, September 3rd & 4th 2011.

U13 CRUSADER CUP REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, AURUKUN

Aurukun Aboriginal Community once again provided excellent surroundings in hosting the 2011 Regional Crusader Cup between Western and Central Cape Communities.

Communities contesting the Cup consisted of Coen State Primary School, Aurukun x2, Lockhart River SPS, Kowanyama SPS and children from Napranum Aboriginal Community.

The Carnival was officially opened by Deputy Mayor Mr Yunkaporta, who said the Aurukun Community was delighted to host the Cup and welcomed all visitors.

From the first match Kowanyama showed it was going to be a force to be reckoned with. The round robin event gave students the opportunity to showcase their skills and team work; key areas they have been training in, for some cases, several weeks.

Aurukun, who nominated two teams for the carnival, demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship in breaking into two even teams instead of building one strong team.

The Lockhart River team was extremely competitive and superbly led by three quarter time. Crusader Regional Cup player Pylarnie Piva, along with Jenny Hobson were shining beacons.

Coen was the surprise package in terms of being the smallest school at the Cup. Each game they played we saw immense improvement. Meagan and Mr. Mac did a great job in encouraging and managing the team.

Napranum also showed excellent improvement, and by the end of the carnival they were pushing the other teams (or might I say the ‘mosquito fleet’).

But as mentioned, Kowanyama were the team to beat. You could see they had been putting in the training by their slick ball movement and ability to hit targets, in particular with their kicking.

The game of the carnival was between Kowanyama and Aurukun Blue. The scores seesawed through the match with Kowanyama kicking the last two goals of the match to win by six points and ultimately take the Cup home.

Special thanks to the Aurukun community; Katrina Matters (Cape York Partnership), teachers from school that participated, Rosalie, Karen and Adrien (Coen Camping Ground), Jo & Staff at Coen State Primary School, Shea PCYC Napranum, Sophie Smith (Weipa), Jeremy Rioli (PCYC Aurukun).

MEDIA RELEASE – QLD SELECTION CAMP FOR KICKSTART U15 CHAMPIONSHIPS

QLD U15 Indig_2011Brisbane Lions triple premiership hero Darryl White returned to Brisbane today to head a selection camp for Queensland’s best young Indigenous footballers.
White will take charge of the camp for 44 indigenous players from across the state as part of an enhanced AFL Kickstart program, which will see a new national U15 championship held on the Gold Coast at the end of the month. White will coach the Queensland team, with AFL Queensland staff including Marc Harbrow and Jesse Green.
Speaking during the Camp, White spoke of his excitement at the opportunity the AFL Kickstart U15 Championships provides for young Indigenous players.
“Camps like this one are a great way for young Indigenous kids to develop both their football and personal skills. They meet other kids from across the State, learn from each other and the staff running the program. To come away from home and get the opportunity to spend two days on skills that will help them in life, no matter how far their footy takes them, is fantastic,” White said.
“It’s great to have the chance to coach them at this stage in their lives. I’m sure we’re going to see a lot of talent, but they need to be leaders in their communities to really go ahead in the Kickstart program.”
The camp is being held at AFL Queensland’s new training and administration centre at Yeronga today (Monday 15) and tomorrow for players from Cape York, Cairns, Townsville, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Brisbane, Gold Coast and the northern rivers of NSW.

QLD U15 INDIGENOUS CAMP

AFL Cape York and AFL Cairns junior players attended a state AFL Camp recently for 15 year olds held in Brisbane, with 13 boys from the region attending the camp.

Players were selected throughout the far north based on school attendance and behaviour.

The two day camp was not just about football but also lifestyle and health; players were engaged in leadership discussions which also focused on health issues, respect and responsibility.

Head Coach and former 3 time premiership player for the Brisbane Lions, Darryl White, gave a very blunt description of indigenous incarceration rates in juvenile justice facilities and jail.

On the field, players were exposed to high performance skill and fitness testing, and put through post- performance rehab exercises.

On the second day two teams were selected and a full scale match was conducted. The skill on show was very encouraging and showcased just how quickly indigenous youth can adjust to the AFL game. When you consider some of the boys had very little AFL experience it was extremely encouraging.

The students that represented the region were fantastic and performed extremely well in all areas of the camp, in particular with regards to leadership.

Well done boys!

The following have been selected in the U15 State Indigenous team; Amey Odo (Horn Island), Henry Mareko (Badu Island), Isaac Rokeby (Coen), Anthony Nicholls (Thursday Island), Tolowah Savage (Horn Island), Zengrey Nona (Badu Island), Jeffrey Hudson (Cairns), Myra Tomsana (Horn Island), Didymus Blanket (Badu Island)

Students were able to connect with organizations and ask key questions and actively try a particular trade which consisted of mechanical, machinery, brick laying, hospitality along with the defense forces and James Cook University. We will now go back to each of the students and give them follow up referrals.

Championships were a great success and something we will be building on for 2012. We hope to engage at least 2-3 more male teams and invite 6 girls team to participate. The careers component was fantastic and really well received by the students.

We would like to recognize the contribution made by AFL Indigenous programs, Coles Supermarkets, Brumby’s, volunteer umpires, Nth Cairns Football Club and volunteers, VPG and career coordinators, medical staff, and all the participating schools.

GOLD COAST SUNS LAUNCH NORTH QUEENSLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS CUP

Gold Coast SUNS players Roland Ah Chee and Alik Magin launched the North Queensland Secondary Schools Cup during a visit to Trinity Bay State High School today.

The players were in town ahead of the Toyota AFL Premiership match to be played against the Richmond Tigers on Saturday 16 July at Cazalys Stadium. They met with players and the coach of the Trinity Bay SHS team to wish them luck and pass on a few skills for the new schools competition that will see 11 secondary schools from across Far North Queensland compete from Wednesday, 13th through to Saturday 16th July.

Speaking at the school Roland Ah Chee congratulated AFL Cape York on the new initiative.

“This is a great concept for young players. Part of our focus at the SUNS is to combine our AFL development with a focus on life after football.
“I think it’s really important to have the chance to find out as much as you can about your career options early on. That way, no matter how far your sport takes you, you have something else to fall back on and I hope the students make of most of the Cup program this week” Ah Chee said.
Up to 250 students from across North Queensland will compete in the four day carnival, with teams coming from Proserpine near Mackey, Townsville and all the way up to Tagai College on Thursday Island. At least one third of the students participating in the championships are Indigenous with four of the schools being classed as Indigenous colleges.
AFL Cape York development officer Kane Richter said the program was developed to create another opportunity for young players from across the region to compete, but with the emphasis firmly placed on their attendance at school and their plans for their own futures.
“Through working closely with communities over the part ten years, we’ve learnt that AFL can be the tool that encourages students to get more involved in school.
Competitions like this one provide the students with a chance to compete, to meet students from across the region and to find out first hand about jobs and training options. It’s great to have Alik and Roland here to show them what they can achieve if they set their minds to it,” he said.
Round-robin matches will be played on Wednesday 13th July from 1pm to 6pm and Thursday 14th July from 9.30 to 5.30pm at Watson’s Oval. The semi-finals will also be played at Watson’s Oval on Friday at a time to be scheduled.

The Grand Final of the North Queensland Secondary Schools Cup will be played at the conclusion of the AFL match, under lights at Cazaly’s Stadium at 5.40pm on Saturday, and all participating students will attend.

The participating schools are Tagai College, Mossman High, Trinity Bay SHS, St Augustine’s College, Smithfield SHS, Djarragun College, Bentley Park College, Cairns SHS, Shalom College, Kirwin SHS from Townsville and Proserpine SHS from Mackay.

Ends.

Under 14 Kids Living Safer Lives CRUSADER report, from Queensland Country Championships, 21/05/2011

u14 champ teamThe U/14 Crusader team arrived in Mackay on Wednesday 8th around 6.00pm and what a surprise they received on arrival, it was freezing and didn’t they feel it! We had left Cairns on a nice cool morning and enjoyed a bright sunny day right through to the Whitsundays. Pulling up at the Eastern Swans oval it was like being in country Victoria or Tasmania in the middle of winter. The lads quickly went for their warmer clothes and didn’t venture far from the club house from then on.
Thursday and Friday were training days as this was the first time we had actually been together as a team since the 2010 Crusader Cup Championships in Weipa last September and understanding each person’s skills and learning names was very important. The lads attacked the training days with a lot of enthusiasm and confidence which was very pleasing for staff. We had a couple of first time support staff with us. AFLCY board member Napau Namok and Aurukun teacher Martin Penfold made themselves available to us for the program. They were very impressed with the overall behaviour of the children.
Saturday was game day and the lads woke full of excitement, this was until they looked outside and saw the strong cold winds and rain pelting down (it must have been around 9-10 degrees). On arrival at the ground it hadn’t changed much, with the Harrop Park surface water logged from the storms the previous night.
Saturday
Game One: The Crusaders first game was against a much bigger and stronger Capricornia side. Due to the conditions we were always going to be up against it and that’s exactly how it panned out. Capricornia were very strong around the ball and pushed our smaller players aside far too easily. The Crusaders tried their hardest but were really undermanned.
Game Two: When the Crusaders play Cairns it is always an enjoyable experience for both teams and officials. Over the past several years the Crusader U/14 team has been very competitive against a more experienced Cairns Lions teams. This year was a little different in that we had the smallest team at the Championships and Cairns the biggest. Cairns from the start were very good in the contests and their forward play just too good for our inexperienced back line, although the boys didn’t stop trying. We were beaten quite decisively but I am confident our boys learnt a lot from the experience. We were very proud of the boys after day one as it was a terribly cold and wet day, something we are not used to but they never once complained and tried their hardest.
Sunday
Game Three: Well, the sun was out and so were the Crusaders in their match against Championship host’s Mackay. From the first bounce our lads were in at the contest fighting for the ball, laying tackles and kicking goals. Ruckman Amey Odo, centre half back, Ezra Charlie and ruck-rover Glendon Woosup were in control of their areas and providing plenty of opportunities for the forwards and midfield players. Crusaders won their first game of the titles in fine form.
Game Four: The lads were full of confidence coming off the back of a good performance against Mackay but they knew Townsville would be a harder task. This game was probably our best performance over the carnival. We were again the smaller team but what we lacked in size we made up for in attitude and desire. We were soundly beaten in the end, but the desire of the Crusaders was fantastic, they never gave up for a minute and gained a lot of respect from the opposition team and the crowd in attendance.
u14 kookasTwo Crusaders were named in the Queensland Country Kookaburras team which will contest State Champs in Brisbane over the school holidays. Joint captains Amey Odo from Tagai College and Glendon Woosup from Abergowrie College led from the front and took their responsibility as team leaders very seriously. They now have the chance to be considered for the Gold Coast Suns Academy program. We wish them well!
We would also like to thank Pat and Trevor from the Eastern Swans AFL Club in Mackay for allowing the Crusaders to camp at their club, your support is greatly appreciated.

U/16 Flying Boomerangs tour of Sydney and Darwin

The U/16 Flying Boomerangs indigenous team regrouped in Sydney to undergo further leadership developments before travelling to Darwin for a game against the Territory Thunder. The camp coincided with the Indigenous All Stars AFL Camp. Having the opportunity to meet and train with their heroes was a real highlight for the young team.
The Boomerangs attended Leadership workshops, lifestyle seminars and trained side by side with the senior All Stars Team. Following three days of an intensive program, the team flew on to Darwin for further training and games. It was my first experience with this group of Boomerangs and it which was a wonderful, privilege and opportunity and privilege to be a part of the team. My role was to mentor the players and assist with all logistics and management of the team. On arrival, all the boys came forward to introduce themselves which showed a clear strong sense of confidence amongst the group. I was a team official on a previous Boomerangs tour of PNG back in 2008 and have a clear understanding of what we AFL Cape York as an organisation is trying to achieve throughout our Indigenous programs. The latest group of Boomerangs highlights the impact the program is having on leadership and education for participants.
Leadership is a well defined pillar of the program and this was evident when the Young Boomrangs had the responsibility of teaching the Indigenous ALL Stars the war Cry. The War Cry is similar to the All Blacks Haka with the same purpose; to and try and intimidate the opposition. The boys did really well and were very proud of their teachings. In turn the senior group were extremely appreciative and impressed by the young Boomerangs.
The All Stars were learning the War Cry in readiness for their match against the Richmond Tigers set to be played indown for Alice Springs. but thanks Due to cyclone Yasi the match had to be cancelled as there was a high risk of flash flooding in Alice.
The Flying Boomerang program provides an opportunity for youth aged boys to participate in National and International AFL programs. AFL Cape York was privileged to have two outstanding representatives at the camp. Ernest Beckley and Myra Tomsana from Horn Island represented their communities and the AFL community with distinction., Both lad’s lead from the front when it came time to present in front of their peers and their behaviour was first class.
Both Ernest and Myra have been involved in the Kickstart program for several years now and have earned a great deal of respect from the team at AFLCY. To be eligible for any AFLCY activity, students must show a commitment to attending school, and practice good behaviour in and around the community.

Inaugural Crusader U18s 2010

For the first time in the AFL Kickstart program’s history, a summer development training program has been established for U/18 Crusader players. This program offers extra training opportunities for students and allows participants to take part in a series of mini country carnivals during 2010 / 2011.

The U/18 Crusader players came together on Thursday 11th November, and have had participated in five training sessions focussed on skills and game sense. The coaching staff were have been extremely happy with the attendance and commitment shown by the players, with an average of 25 boys training each night.

On the Saturday 27th November, the Crusaders travelled to Townsville for the first of several mini carnivals, competing against sides from Townsville and Mackay. The team assembled on Friday evening for some team bonding and dinner. The early morning alarm rang out came at 5.45am with the boys looking out the window to pouring rain. The boys got ready and piled into the Crusader bus and troopies for the trip south. We finally arrived in Townsville seven hours later due to a detour through the Gillies Ranges, because of low level flooding on the Bruce Highway, and the team had a half hour rest before our first game against Townsville.

During the first half of the first game, you could have said the Crusaders were in the 12th round against Muhammad Ali. To say the Crusaders looked a little sluggish would be an understatement, but after half time the boys got their groove back only to go down in a close game by 11 points.

After a short ten minute break, the Crusaders had to back up and play their second game of the day against Mackay. After a fast start with the burley Mackay full forward kicking 4 goals in the first 10 minutes, the Crusaders turned on the ‘after burners’ and ran the Mackay boys ragged through the midfield. The Crusaders flair and speed shone out, withand exceptional efforts from Johny Nicholson, Andrew Garrett and Henry Mareko turning the game around with their run and carry and ball winning ability. The Crusaders came home with the win in a hard fought game

Best Players for Crusaders-

After a quick meeting, the boys piled back into the bus and troopies to headma home. After a tremendous effort for by the whole team, a long day turned out to be a fantastic experience, with a number of boys having their first taste of structured AFL competition and games. Captain Hodrick Mudu lead well all day with his professionalism, Tinnus David was rock solid down back, Josh Hanlon tried hard all day instructing and directing, and the likes of first timers Bradley Stevens, Broski Emery-Hunia, Phillip Ahbram and David Pearson impressed the coaching staff. Well done everyone!.
A big thank you goes outalso to Sue Botto from Abergowrie who helped out as team trainer and AFL Cape York staff; Dwayne Bosen, Dave Maddock-Jones, and Marc Harbrow (and Mahlay) for making the trip down to assist.

U16 Crusader Girls 2010

The Crusader Girls recently travelled to Cairns to partake in the State U16 Girls titles.

The Crusaders came together as a team for the first time on Wednesday when girls from Thursday Island (Tagai College) and NPA (NPA college) flew in to join the Djarragun girls at Kuiyam hostel. After dinner the girls attended a session of team building and leadership activities which gave them a chance to gel as a team and get to know each other.

Thursday was planned as a big day. The girls were out of bed at 7am for a walk and kick of the footy before heading to Watsons Oval for an intense training session so the girls could work on their skills ahead of the first game. After training the girls were off to the Cairns campus of JCU for a tour of the facilities. This gave the girls a chance to hear about options that are available to them after school. The aim of the tour was to encourage the girls to think outside the square in terms of their options and to believe that Uni is a possibility! There was also a chance to talk with mentors and current indigenous students about ‘Life at Uni’ and support that is available!
After JCU it was a quick bite to eat on the way to TAFE for a tour. This tour gave the girls a similar experience allowing the girls to discover their passion and open their eyes. After the tour of TAFE the girls headed to AFL Cape York office for a 'Respect Yourself' session with Leanne Ramsamy - partner with Kids Living Safer Lives program. The session involved the girls having a facial, then doing their own makeup. This was an opportunity for the girls to learn about the importance of a positive self image, personal grooming and making sure they feel good about themselves. In what was an enjoyable and relaxing session the girls finished looking beautiful before heading to Fasta Pasta for dinner.

Friday was Footy Day! The girls were up and off to the esplanade for a kick and bite to eat before heading to Watsons Oval for the opening ceremony. The Crusaders were first game against the highly fancied Brisbane Flames. The Crusaders started the game well matching the Brissy girls in the contest. The flames skill and game sense shone out over the course of the game with the crusaders going down. The Crusaders passion and relentless pressure was what the girls would take into the next game against the gold coast. The girls put in a great effort in their second game, matching the opposition in the second half. After the game the girls headed for their new accommodation at Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre.

Saturday brought a time to relax. The girls were able to have a well earned sleep in and then headed to Smithfield Shopping centre for a short time on the way to the Crystal Cascades for a swim and recovery session before lunch. After 10mins of moans and groans about the temperature of the water, it took a further 25mins trying to get the girls out. After the refreshing swim the girls headed back to camp for lunch and prepare for the game ahead. The third game was against the Crusaders rivals North Queensland. After a positive start the girls went into the first quarter break 9 points down. The next three quarters were hard fought with the NQ girls grinding out the win. Crusaders girls Vera Gibuma and Megan Anau again showed their toughness at the ball and Shandel Sam never gave up.
After the game the girls headed to the Esplanade for a BBQ and recovery session in the lagoon, then it was back out to Holloways for a well earned sleep and plenty of ice for the captain Carmille Pearson.
Sunday, the final day of the carnival, and the last day the girls were together brought another tough schedule with the girls having to play back to back games against PNG and the Central Coast. The girls again showed tremendous fight and determination pushing through pain and injury. Both captains, Veteran Carmille played on one leg (ankle) and Vera (knock to the head) showed the true sense of the Crusader Spirit and never give up attitude playing both of the final games which saw the Crusaders kick two goals in the final game. Right to the end the girls were seen laughing and smiles all round.
Congratulations to Kathy Loban who won the MVP Medal and Vera Gibuma and Carmille Pearson for their Allstars Selection. Well Done Girls.
A big thank you to Angie Nadredre for leading the team as coach and Laura Martin (Manager), Malita Sagaukaz (Runner) and Tammy Collins (Runner) for their assistance with the week.

U15 Chris Johnson Cup and U16 Angie Nadredre Cup
DAY 1
The first very early morning (6am) had everyone meeting the AFL Cape York headquarters in Cairns where we loaded ourselves in the Troopies and made our way up the bumpy Cape York track on our way to the NPA (Northern Peninsular Area). First stop was at Lakelands Junction where we had a quick snack and back on the road again.
Our next stop was at Musgrave Station for a well earned rest and some lunch. Then it was back on the bumpy road again on our way to Bramwell Junction.
The first night had us camp at Bramwell Junction where Chris Johnson ran a Leadership talk, Marc Harbrow spoke on his life’s journey battling Leukaemia and Kane Richter did a brief talk on trust.
DAY 2
Up early, another 6am morning and onto the bumpy track to Cape York and NPA.
Around eleven o’clock on the second day saw us arrive at NPA where we grabbed our lunches and headed straight out to Pajinka (the Tip of Cape York) where we had lunch. After lunch saw us head back in to New Mapoon where the students had a training run on the newly appointed AFL ground in New Mapoon.
Later that afternoon we made our way over to Bamaga where we set up our sleeping arrangements in the NPA Secondary Campus. After dinner there were a number of workshops run for the students.
The first workshop was run by Chris Johnson who spoke about sexual assault and consent, this session was very educational, emotional for some and it gave the students the opportunity to be better informed and able to travel throughout life with more knowledge about this particular subject.
The second session was delivered by the Bravehearts team and it targeted personal safety and was a great follow on to what was discussed in the first session. This session gave the students great information on how and where to access services when their personal safety has been breached. It also gave examples of situations that they may find themselves in and how to avoid these type situations.
The third session was run by Myself and Kane Richter (Kids Living Safer Lives) and we ran a session, based on “trust and earning ones trust”, leadership and “what is good leadership” and “how we can show good leadership within and throughout our lives”.

DAY 3
The morning of day three saw everyone rising at the early hour of 6.30am (due to an alarm). It was quick showers, breakfast and off to New Mapoon for the Opening Ceremony for the Carnival. This year’s Carnival saw six teams in total, Tagai College, Djarragun College and a mixed Western Central Cape team made up of students from Weipa, Aurukun, Yarrabah and NPA College. It also saw three girl teams one from Tagai College, one from Djarragun College and one from the NPA College.
The level of football shown by those who participated was of a very high standard and the hard work and dedication shown by our development workers throughout the Cape over the year is starting to show.
Games were played in good spirit and all the student showed great potential as AFL footballers and showed great sportsman/womenship and leadership in their endeavour to take out the big prize “The Cup”.
This year’s results saw Djarragun College take out the Chris Johnson Cup for the boy’s competition and Tagai College take out the girl’s competition for the Angie Nadredre Cup.
After the closing ceremony, you guessed it. It was back on that bumpy road home. But wait; there is a surprise in store. A brief stop off at the Beautiful “Fruit Bat Falls” where the students were able to relax in the cool tropical waters of Cape York before getting back on that, bumpy old road. It was then only a short “110km” trip to Bramwell Junction to setup camp and relax around the campfire and enjoy a BBQ dinner under the stars.
6am!!!!! Did you say? Yes it’s up and atom, packing tents and sleeping bags, breakfast, packing troopies and back on the road again. Next stop was Musgrave Station for a quick lunch, then back in the troopies for the last leg home to Cairns were we arrived in Cairns at 8.30pm that night.
So as you can see, these trips take a lot of time and effort to coordinate and conduct and the students commitment and behaviour was outstanding and without such cooperation from the students these events would just be a nightmare. So a BIG Thank You goes out to all those involved both, Students, Teachers, Community Members and Staff from all those agencies involved.
Richard McLean (KLSL)

WCCCA U13 Crusader Cup Championship
September 5th–6th 2010

Our U13 Crusader Regional Champs kicked off well with all teams arriving in Weipa on time safe and soundand . Meeting the Tagai College Students at the airport was a highlight with Amey Odo standing head and shoulders over everyone in the building. Little did people know Amey is only 13 years of age. There was much to do for the teams’steam’s with jam packed three day itinerary consisting of educational health and making good choices workshops and of course AFL games and training. . Teams participating were the Thursday Island Dockers, Outer Island Eagles, Western Central Lions and the Cook Clusters Cats. Teams were made up of schools within their regions each consisting of 16 per side, teams were selected from regional Crusader Cups held earlier in term three It was fantastic to see 5 girls participating at the carnival, the y did a wonderful job in terms of leadership both on and off the field. The boys got shock at just how good the girls could play and were not intimidated one bit by the boys well done Ivy Nona, Rebecca Peters, Jennifer Hobson, Tamina Bassini & Aima Paii.

A big thank you goes out to the QLD Police Service who attended the carnival and provided workshops such like Be Strong Be Heard, Violence No Way and Weed It Out programs. The children responded well to each of the sessions and no doubt picking up beneficial tools and knowledge to take back to their respective communities. Thank you to Ryta Price from the Bawai Dance Company who played a huge part in coordinating the carnival concert. Apart of the students participation was to learn a cultural contemporary dance choreographed by Ryta and then perform in it in front of an audience of about 100-150 people at the Weipa Camp Grounds. The students rehearsed for two days with Rita in getting all their moves correct. Weipa locals and campers came down to watch the students perform which made that Tuesday night in Weipa a memorable one. Thank you to Kids Living Safer Lives project officer Richard McLean who gave the students a big laugh when he came out in a hula segment in a sarong and palm tree fonds around his waist well done and interesting.

There were six matches held over the three days with players showing wonderful skills and determination with all games being very competitive. . The Torres Strait teams proved to be strong but not strong enough for the mighty Cook Cluster Cats who were very well drilled . Cats coaches Dave MJ and John Bundy would disagree and say its all about the coaching, so well done lads. Sharp skills and lightning speeds were evident from the first day of games. Player Walter Peters from Coen made side stepping look like a walk in the park. Walter was a highlight player and made it very clear that he would love to play the AFL game on the big stage in the future. . Thank you to We would like to make mention three Weipa lads Marley Ahmat, Leroy Ahmat and Sam Patrono. who participated in te event, well done boys and thanks for your support.

The Crusader Cup Championships are not only used as an incentive for children to attend school on a consistant basis but to also select 23 players to represent the U14 Crusader team at the 2011Queensland Country Championships to be held in regional Queenslanjd in June. Players selected will be closely monitored at school and general behavior around their community.

U14 Country Championships

Recently the Queensland Country Championships were held in Cairns at Cazalys on 5th and 6th June. The Crusader U14 team was name during the 2009 Crusader Championships in Weipa. The Crusaders came together , from far and wide throughout the Cape and Torres Strait region, two days prior to the carnival to start their intensive training and teambuilding program in preparation for their first game on Saturday. The players attitude and commitment was evident as they embarked on their new life challenge. Leadership type students like Zengrey Nona, Henry Mareko and Anthony Nicholls made clear messages through their communication skills that they were there to play footy.

The first day of training was primarily focused on bringing the students together as one team by getting to know one another through training drills and skills. The AFL Cape York team knew very well that we wouldn’t stand a chance at Country Champs if we play as individuals. Thursday was a challenging full day of training with a gruelling session. The Crusaders finished the day heading out to Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre where the boys were arranged into their leadership groups.
Friday brought a new day of teambuilding and training based drills around game style and getting their hands on the footballs. By lunchtime the boys finished off their session and headed to Trinity Beach for a recovery session with a few of the boys showing their ‘crash-tackling skills’ on the waves.

Saturday 5th June
The Crusaders were itching and raring to show the football world their skills and flair. The boys were up early for a walk and stretch on the beach before heading to Cazalys for their opening game against...
The Crusaders started off slow in the first quarter before the on-ball brigade of Derek Ingui, Ralph Daniel and Henry Mareko turned the afterburners pumping the ball inside the forward 50m with Wujal Wujal spark Hazeman Nandy, nephew to Patrick Nandy, kicking many goals helping the Crusaders kick away after half time and coming away with the win.

The Crusaders had to regroup for their second game, Anthony Nichols was standing strong down back, and Jonathon Tomsana worked into the game well. Again Hazeman Nandy was on fire in the forward line booting goals and the on ballers ran hard through the middle.

After the two gruelling games on the big open spaces of Cazalys, the Crusaders headed out to Holloways Beach for a recovery session and a well earned rest.

Sunday 6th June
The Crusaders were up again early for a walk and stretching session, followed by breakfast, then headed to Cazalys for their final two games. Their first game being the big one against rivals Cairns.

The final game against Townsville finished with a strong effort however not being able to accommodate for the well drilled Townsville side.

The Carnival finished with the Crusaders finishing 3rd overall, a great effort considering this was some of the boys first games of football for 2010. A big congratulations goes out to Henry Mareko, Ralph Daniel, Jonathon Tomsana, Zengray Nona, Derek Ingui for making the QLD Country Side.
Also well done to Jonathon Tomsana and Zengray Nona for winning the Crusaders Most Valuable Player Award.

The Crusader program is a great incentive program for students from the Cape York and Torres Strait region to aspire to. Its primary focus lays outside the footy arena in terms of students school attendance and behaviour within their respective communities. To make the Crusader team is a great achievement in itself and to those 23 boys who made it, a job well done. You have left a positive and high benchmark for future Crusader participants.

Crusader U16 Carnival 2010

The new crew of U16 Crusaders took part in the U16 Country Championships in early May, aiming to make history and winning the championship for the third straight year in a row. The carnival was held over Saturday and Sunday with the Crusader boys playing six games against some quality opposition from the other country regions of the state.
The Crusaders arrived in Rockhampton on Wednesday and took part in two full days of training and team building in preparation for the carnival. Friday the boys finished their final training session at lunch and then headed out to Yeppoon for a recovery session in the saltwater and a relaxing afternoon.
Come Saturday the Crusaders were raring to play some football. Saturday was a massive day scheduled for the Crusaders having 4 games, however, they performed extremely well. Accounting for Townsville in game one and then Mackay in Game two the boys were on song, but realised their biggest challenge in their three peat attempt was in Game three against Cairns. Cairns came out firing kicking the first three goals despite the Crusaders having the majority of possession in the first half and wasting opportunities in front of goal. The skills and pressure applied by Cairns enabled them to go on with the game to win.
Despite the defeat to Cairns the Crusaders regrouped to put in a great team effort in the final game of the day to defeat Bundaberg Wide Bay and earn a well deserved rehab session in the pool on the way home.
With a slim hope of taking out the championship, the Crusaders arrived at the ground for their first game on Sunday against Capricornia who had been playing some solid football throughout the carnival. The Crusaders were on song putting in a brilliant effort to come away with the win. With a long break in between this game and the last of the carnival the Crusader boys were excited about playing for the last time with each other and showing everyone the Crusaders style of flair and speed. Spurred on by the tradition of the ANZACS and our ancestors the boys put in a great final game to account for Darling Downs in the final game and come away with second place in the championships. Not a bad effort considering the team came together for the first time on the Wednesday before.
A big congratulations goes to our four QLD Country Representatives; Aquila Gela (Abergowrie), Eddie Daniels (Bentley Park), Sig Wigness (Abergowrie) and Milton Miskin (Trinity Bay), well done boys. Also congratulations to Aquila Gela for taking out the Crusaders MVP award. Aquila had a great carnival and showed tremendous leadership around the group on and off the field. Final congratulations goes to Hodrick Newman for winning the Coaches Award. Hodrick showed fantastic leadership around the group, along with his professionalism.
The Crusaders program has given opportunities to indigenous boys from Cape York to travel and be a part of something special. To learn about respect, healthy living and making positive life choices, gives these boys a memory that will last a lifetime.

U17 Indigenous Secondary State School Match - Gordonvale

AFL Cape York in conjunction with the Kickstart program held preliminary rounds of the U/17 Indigenous High schools Championships on Tuesday 11th May.
The three team program was held at the Gordonvale AFL facility the home of Pyramid Power junior club.
Teams participating were Djarragun, Gordonvale and Abergowrie Colleges with a further match to be held be played between NPA and Tagai Colleges in Bamaga later in the month.

It was the first time Gordonvale SHS has been involved in the program and they showed with some solid training that they will be very competitive when it comes up to regional championships played in late June.
The first game was between Djarragun and Gordonvale which was played with a lot of enthusiasm due to both schools being situated in Gordonvale and each school looking to take bragging rights.
Gordonvale Power opened the scoring with plenty of dash and work ethic coming from their half back and centre line players. Former Crusader player Jayden Kynuna and Power centre half back Ken Darcy along with Steve Daniels playing in his first AFL competition lead the way.
Djarragun were trailing at the start of the second half that was until small live were Kieran Johnson and ruckman Tinus David were injected into the lineup. From that moment Djarragun College jumped into gear eventually winning the game convincingly.

Game two between last yrs champions and Djarragun College lived up to expectations with both teams taking the contest very seriously and it also acted as a good opportunity to get a good understanding how each was looking going forward to Championships held later on in the year. Ity was goal for goal throughout the match with Abergowrie kicking clear late in the second half. They had many fine contributors like Javid Bowen, rover Paul Savo who dominated the in close play and Aquila Gela fresh from State AFL Championships was everywhere.
For Djarragun Kieran Johnson, Patrick Atu, Tinus David and Paiwan Gaidon were solid and provide their forward with plenty of opportunities but unfortunately were unable to convert.

Game three played between Abergowrie and Gordonvale again showed that Gordonvale has what it takes to compete at this level. Abergowrie was the more dominant team but Gordonvale didn’t give an inch and were very competitive against a much more experienced team.

To finish the day we selected two teams from the day’s pool of players and held a scratch match. The game was a ripper with teams being evenly matched. The group seemed to really enjoy playing alongside players from other teams and gelled really well together, this also helps in breaking down any barriers that may occur. Although it was tough trying to give each player equal playing time due to each team having 29 players it was a great success.

We would like to acknowledge all students and schools for supporting the games and in particular to the staff, Christian, Gordonvale SHS, Dave, Djarragun College, Jim, Pyramid Power, and Michael and Sue from Abergowrie College for making the trip north.
We would also like to thank the great umpiring duo of Marc Harbrow and Kane Richter, stay at it lads you just might make good umpires one day.

We look forward to the next round of matches when teams contest regional finals followed by winners contesting Regional championships to be held in Cairns, July 26th-27th.

AFL Indigenous Youth Tour to South Africa 25/01 – 04/02/10

What a tour, what an opportunity for 24 young indigenous players.
The AFL Foundation in conjunction with the AFL Kickstart program successfully coordinated the third Boomergangs tour of South Africa. Previous tours were conducted in 2006 and 2008.

Patrick (PJ) Nandy; Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Community and George Freeman, Rockhampton represented Queensland with great distinction. All State and Territories other than Tasmania had representation. Patrick was named joint Captain along with Kial Crowe, NSW.

The major focus of the tour was to prepare future Indigenous leaders. During the tour players were put through a series of workshops and leadership responsibilities. Five team groups were established with each group assigned a key mentor or elder.

Two games were staged, one in the North West Province or Potchestrom the other in Cape Town. Potchestrom staged game one at the only AFL field in the region. The Boomerangs were surprised by the competiveness and skills of the North Province team. They were also struggling to come to terms with the water logged surface. Potchestrom had received heavy rain falls leading up to the match.

Due to a determined last quarter the Boomerangs prevailed by 10 points.
Game 2 saw the Boomerangs travel to Nyanga Community to take on the Lions Coastal team.

From the first bounce the Boomerangs controlled the game. They made the most of the windy conditions to kick seven goals to the Lions one.
Although the Boomerangs were happy with their performances it was more about learning more about themselves and how they can build on their leadership qualities.

Mark Yettica – Paulson from Melbourne did an amazing job in pulling the leadership program together. Players demonstrated leadership through day to day tasks, public speaking and team work activities. Each day a new group would be responsible to manage the remaining group. This was great exposure to learning how to manage a group and tasks required.

Players were spoiled by having fantastic Indigenous mentors on the tour. Jason Mifsud AFL Foundation CEO, Michael O’Loughlin former Sydney Swans star and Indigenous team of the century player; Chris Johnson, three time premiership player with the Brisbane Lions, Malcolm Lynch, 2006 Boomerangs captain and three year with the Western Bulldogs. All men are outstanding leaders in their own right and forwarded many learning experiences on to the Boomerangs.
As well as all the leadership there was also an opportunity to explore the wonderful South African wilderness and culture. The African people are so friendly and welcoming. In all areas visited locals demonstrated a real appreciation of the Boomerangs and engaged freely with the team.

Our highlights consisted of a tour of Pilensburg National Game Park, a visit to Suncity, tour of the Apthied Museum, hike up Table Mountain, tour of Seweto township and a two day stay at Monash University Johannesburg where the group took part in a interactive African Drum session; AFL commissioner Linda Dessau was in her element.

It may take sometime for parts of the group to realise the magnitude of the tour, but we are sure they will take back to their communities a greater sense of their responsibility and identity.

The group will now be monitored by AFL Indigenous Employment Manager who will be assisting team members to gain meaningful and consistence employment and also tertiary education.

Abergowrie Take Out U17 Secondary Schools Championships - 29th July 2009

'Sponsored by Dept of Communities & Dept of Communities-ATSIP'

St Teresa's Abergowrie College are the 2009 winners of the U17 Indigenous Secondary Schools Championships held at Cazalys Stadium, Cairns on 29th July 2009 after defeating Tagai College Thursday Island and Djarragun College Gordonvale in the finals. Djarragun College finished second.

Game 1: Abergowrie vs Tagai

Q1 Abergowrie made their intentions known from the start by kicking 3.4 to nill with a handy breeze. Abergowrie dominated the midfield clearances and settled immediately into their rhythm. The Loban brothers, Stacey and Lorrie, were solid defenders for Tagai whilst Ali Sambo hit the contest hard and provided some drive off half back against a very even Abergowrie outfit.

Q2 Abergowrie kicked 2 early goals against the breeze and the warning bells were sounding for Tagai, who now trailed by more than 5 goals. Tagai shifted George Gabey to Centre Half Forward in an attempt to generate more in their forward line and Richard Passi began to dominate the ruck contests, but was mostly unrewarded with Abergowrie winning most clearnaces. Hodrick Newman provided lot of drive as the Abergowrie link-man Harry Kepple was creative on the wing and Bert Whap was nearly impassable at full back. Lorrie Loban continued to play well for Tagai across half back. The teams traded goals until Abergowrie scored late to take a 5 goal lead in at half time (7.4.46 to 2.4.16) outscoring Tagai against a strong breeze. A highlight was a 60 meter plus kick-in by Bert Whap against the breeze.

Q3 Abergowrie crushed Tagai, making the most of the scoring end. Javid Bowen showed good signs, with his height and pace causing Tagai constant troube. Leroy Enosa switched into the ruck and began to dominate the ruck contests for Abergowrie 13.6.84 to 3.4.22. A highlight was a full length of ground goal by Abergowrie starting with a clearance from the goal line by Bert Whap and passing through at least 10 sets of Abergowrie hands without any Tagai playertouching the ball.

Q4 Tagai started well with a goal immediately upon resumption following strong ruck work by Richard Passi and hard running by Ali Sambo, but this served to increase the effort by Abergowrie who piled on 4 unanswered goals to run out 17.6.114 to 4.6.39 winners, with Leroy Enosa and Harry Kepa their best in the final quarter.

Game 2 Tagai vs Djarragun

Q1 Tagai started off with renewed vigor and caught Djarragun off-guard but failed to capitalise on several goal opportunities with the breeze. Djarragun's more experienced players, Paul Walit, Alton Matthew and Alex Namai, began to assert themselves and Djarragun eventually scored 2 goals against the breeze against the general run of play. Djarragun 2.1 to Tagai 0.2

Q2 Djarragun began to find space but missed some easy shots on goal. Tagai players were winning plenty of the ball but had difficulty linking with their team mates and many passes were being intercepted and being turned into Djarraun opportunities. A lot of game time was lost when a Tagai player went down with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury. Djarragun had to settle for 2 goals with the breeze to no score, scores being Djarragun 4.6.30 to Tagai 0.2.0 at half time.

Q3 Tagai suffered a further setback with the loss of Richard Passi, who had exhausted himself with efforts in the ruck and at ground level. Tagai were now without an interchange bench. Djarragun were now dominating across the ground and piled on 4.2 against the breeze to Tagai's 1.2 to lead 8.8.56 to 1.4.10

Q4 Tagai kicked the first 2 goals against the breeze but any hope of a miraculous comeback was snuffed out as Djarrgun kicked the next 3 goals to run out comfortable winners 11.11.77 to 3.4.22. Best for Djarragun were Joel Danger, Eliza Jackonia, Patrick Atu, Alton Matthew, Alex Namai and Paul Walit while Lorrie Loban, Stacey Loban and Ali Sambo played well for Tagai.

Game 3 Abergowrie vs Djarragun

Q1 The first term of what was effectively the Grand Final began as an arm wrestle as both teams threw themselves into the play. Whilst most observers would have placed the bigger Abergowrie as clear favourites, 2008 winners Djarragun were not going to let the champions cup go without a fight. After trading goals early, Abergowrie began to improve their use of the ball and finished the quarter off with a goal to take a 7 point lead at 1/4 time.

Q2 Abergowrie now has use of the breeze but still couldn't shake Djarragun, who ran the ball wide at almost every opportunity in order to avoid the dominate Abergowrie players who favored the central corridor. Each team scored a goal, with Abergowrie taking an 8 point lead at half time, 4.3.27 to 3.1.19.

Q3 Abergowrie opened with a quick goal to finally get some scoreboard space, only for Djarragun to immediately reply from a downfield goal following a late hit on Djarragun's Paul Walit by an Abergowire opponent. Abergowrie goaled again only to have that goal negatived with a second Djarragun goal to Paul Walit after another Abergowrie indiscretion. However, Abergowrie again broke away with a goal to Leroy Enosa after a great mark. With Kiefer Paul showing some real ability at full forward, Abergowrie ended up with 5 goals to 2 against the breeze to take a 26 point lead into the final quarter - 9.3.57 to 5.1.31. Best for Abergowrie were Hodrick Newman and Leroy Enosa, whilst Harry Kepa showed great dash with the ball in his hands.

Q4 Abergowrie had the breeze and took full advantage against a tiring Djarragun team. Sensing that the contest was theirs, Abergowrie lifted as a whole and closed Djarragun out with a 3.3 to nil final quarter. Paul Walit battled hard for Djarragun in a best on ground display in a losing team. Abergowrie 12.6.78 defeated Djarragun 5.1.31

Coaches Award Winners;
Abergowrie College - Leroy Enosa, Djarragun College - Paul Walit, Tagai College - Francis Mosby

U14 Qld Country Championships - Cairns 6th & 7th June 2009

Game 1
Crusaders 9.3.57 def Mackay 0.2.2

It was a great start to the Championships with the Crusaders notching up a convincing victory over Mackay. In good conditions the Crusaders were in control from the first bounce. This was due to a dominant midfield lead by Badu Island lads Yamba Bowie and Joseph Kebisu.

When Mackay did win passion they were halted by the Crusaders rock solid defence. Ritti Nona, Soloman Blanket and Medi Richard were almost unpassable across half back.

Best Players; Alfred Bond, Yamba Bowie, Joseph Kebisu, Milton Miskin, Medi Richards
Goal Kickers; Alfred Bond (3), Joseph Kebisu (2), Ashton Yam (1), Medi Richards (1), Ralph Daniel (1), Milton Miskin (1)

Game 2
Crusaders 7.6.48 def Townsville 3.2.20

Townsville always gives a great contest and this game was no different. The Crusaders had to work hard in all facets of the game. The midfield was again and the top of their game and gave good delivery by foot to key forwards when it did hit the deck Alfred Bond was there to crumb, finishing with 3 goals.

Best Players; Zengrey Nona, Alfred Bond, Joseph Kebisu, Tyson Smiler, Yamba Bowie
Goal Kickers; Alfred Bond (4), Joseph Kebisu (2), Ashton Yam (1)

Game 3
Cairns 10.5.65 def Crusaders 4.3.27

This match was always going to be the match of the championships with both sides evenly matches. The first half was a battle royal with both teams winning the hard ball and giving forwards opportunity. Half time scores were locked together which made the 2nd half an early awaited contest.

Cairns skipped out of the blocks and added a lot of pressure on the Crusaders ball winners. There were several undisciplined actions from the Crusaders which gave Cairns Lions the upper hand. In the end it was a well deserved victory by the Lions and very good learning curb for the Crusaders.

U17 Indigenous Secondary High Schools Games

Abergowrie College sent out a strong warning to other colleges taking part in the 2009 U17 Indigenous Secondary High School series.

Practice games were conducted at Gordonvale and Bamaga to kick off the 2009 Program, which is proudly sponsored by Department of Communities and ATSIP.

Shalom, Abergowrie, Djarragun Colleges and Gordonvale/Woodleigh High Schools played a round robin carnival at Gordonvale while NPA College played host to Tagai College at Bamaga Oval.

Abergowrie showed that they will be very hard to contain coming into regional games and chmapionships.  They have very good depth, talent and a good understanding of the game.  Djarragun College also showed good signs as did Shalom College and combined team Gordonvale/Woodleigh.

Tagai College had the wood over an undermanned NPA College in their encounter Tagai had a very fast and more senior team than that of the younger NPA squad.

It was great to see the U17 girls match between Tagai and NPA being played as a Curtain raiser match to the boys game.  Although there were no scores and it was very competitive match.'We look forward to the next round of matches held in mid June.  The winners from these fames will travel to Cairns for the Regional Championships in July.

Abergowrie, Djarragun, Shalom, College Matches

The day started with a fantastic atmosphere, with Abergowrie taking on Djarragun.  The wet and slipplery conditions set the scene for some tough footy.  Although the weather tried to dampen the day, the slinky skills of both sides shone through.  Abergowrie took the honors in the first half with Djarragun fighting their way back in second half with possession, but just could not capitalise on the score board.  It was Abergowrie's tall timber that was the difference between the two sides, as they were able to brush the smaller players aside.  The ability of the Abergowrie players to take strong marks in the wet their direct kicking through the middle of the ground made hard work for the Djarragun defence.  The run for the backline players made the game an exciting one.  Abergowrie ran out winners 6-6-42 to Djarragun 1-4-10.

Shalom and  combined was a good tussle with the weather playing a major role with their skills.  Some palyers showed great skills for Shalom to push the more experienced Combined schools to a hard fought win.  Combined Schools eventually ran out winners 2-2-14 to Shalom 1-1-7.

The next game between Shalom and Abergowrie was a one sided affair with Abergowrie's size and experience shining through and taking control of the game.  Shalom's size slowed Abergowrie's run in the middle, but wasn't enough to stem the tide of players running though the middle Abergowrie won the game convincinggly 8-6-54 to Shalom 0-1-1.

Game 4 saw combined play Abergowrie.  by this stage Abergowrie started to tire and allowed Combined Schools to stay competitive, until Abergowrie's experience and size shone through to push Combined aside.  Again the Combined players played well, but were outmuscled by the bigger Abergowrie players.  Abergowrie 9-1-55 defeating Combined Schools 4-3-27.

Djarragun's experience came to the fore when they played Shalom.  Their ability to find the running player made the game an exciting one to watch.  If it wasn't for the defence of the Shalom defenders the scoreline would have been a lot greater.  Their ability to read the play and repel the attack was great, only to see the ball being kicked back over their heads from the centre.  Djarragun won 10-7-77 to Shalom 1-1-7.

The las game saw Djarrgun vs the Combined Schools.  Due to the long day the players were getting weary and lost focus on their skills, but never gave up.  Both teams battled until the end with Djarragun winning the game 7-4-46 to Combined Schools 4-3-27.

Overall the day was a fantastic successful day, well run by Marc Harbrow and his support crew in JJ, Miles and Graham with Rick Hanlon ensuring the day started off well.  Congradulations to the players for their efforts and outstanding skills that were on display.  Thanks must also go to Steve Daniels, Jimmy Floyd and Joe Christianson for their assistance throughout the day and especially the schools for allowing their students to give up important classroom experiences for the priceless learning experiences these carnivals create.  Although these carnivals are an AFL based event, they also teach the young adults about team work, playing your role in the team, help and support your team mate under pressure, communication skills and overall respect for yourself and people you associate with.
