COOKCLUSTER CRUSADER CUP
August 10th-11th 2010

The 2010 Cookcluster Crusader Cup carnival held at Cooktown State School proved to be successful once again. Participating teams consisted of Djarragun College, Yarrabah, Bloomfield SPS and Cooktown SHS. Yarrabah and Djarragun teams travelled up the day before the carnival to make sure they were ready for battle.
Djarragun College coach Dave Maddock Jones decided he would take a scenic tour up the Daintree before realizing he was on the wrong track, who says men can read maps. Tracking back to Rex Range then finally on their way to Cooktown taking 6 hours instead of the normal 4 made quite a trip for the legendary coach and his team.

Yarrabah coach Ian Prest took a more direct route and arrived in Cooktown with his charges on the big 22 seater community bus. Student’s eager to impress raced of the bus and straight into some kicking in the car park, early practice is important.
Kadiesha Atkinson who represented the U/12 Crusader in 2010 got off the bus and he first words to Development Officer Marc Harbrow was “sir, when we playing”. Marc informed her that games didn’t commence until the next day Kadiesha went into a 30 minute silence in disappointment and protest.

Children woke on Wednesday to a typical bright Cooktown day, an early start for all teams as the first game kicked off at 9:00am.

Djarragun versus Yarrabah was the first match and it was obvious from the first bounce that Djarragun was going to be tough to beat.

Torres Strait / NPA WCCT Crusader Cup - 4th & 5th Sept 2010
Thursday Island was the picturesque scene for the 2010 Torres Strait WCCT Crusader Cup. Six teams from Thursday Island, Saibai/Dauan Island, Horn Island and Badu Island participated in what was a very competitive regional Kickstart carnival.

Teams have been going through their training passes during this term in readiness for the event which was evident. AFL cape York staff were very pleased with the style of game played and in particular the high skill level showed by all teams. Saibai Island/Dauan team were very impressive and showed you don’t have to be the biggest and strongest team to be competitive and how well you can play by using the ball effectively with good skills and decisions. Eleven year olds Giovanni Wosomo, Freddy Wosomo and Jordan Warasum were outstanding in winning the football and then distributing it cleanly through hand or foot, they were given plenty of support from tall ruckman Allan Wosomo who improved each game.

Badu Island was the early bench mark with good early wins in the competition but was going to be pushed by the Thursday Island Ochre team. As the competition went on the better the Thursday Island teams became in particular, Ochre. Lead extremely well by big lad Amey Odo and forward Solomona Nona they were able to get control in the ruck which gave forwards greater scoring opportunities. The Badu Island team was very well lead by Rashid Nona, Jame Ahmat, Nathan Tamwoy and Ibegun Mene. Rashid, Nathan and Ibegun have all been Crusader Representative Players in the past and will push hard for U/14 selection at the Crusader Cup championships in September. Their overall experience was going to be a telling factor at the carnival as they brought other team mates in the games.

Horn Island lead superbly by fullback Josh Wasaga showed plenty of spirit; considering they were the youngest team overall they should feel proud of their performance. Other players to perform well were Wayne heritage, Paul Tomsana, Richard McKeown, Joseph Daniel and Garo Henry.

Thursday Island teams Green and also Lime was more than competitive and played some outstanding football. When Thursday Island AFL co-coordinator Sam Zangara made up his three teams he tried to select three very even teams for which he was very successful.
For T.I Lime Bradley Kris Ujabi Matthew and Daniel Bosen were excellent. They lead by example in all facets of their games which was rewarded by selection in the T.I Rep team. The T.I Green team was well served by Emmerson Charlie, Ezra Charlie and Chris Sambo.

The following players have been selected in the Thursday Island and the Outer Island teams to contest the u/13 Crusader Cup in Weipa, September 6th-8th, 2010. It will be the first time two teams from the Torres Strait have been selected to attend the championships. "See below"

U12 Primary School State Championships

June 12th-16th the U12 State Primary School Championships was held in Cairns at the Cazalys stadium. 9 teams in total participated in the carnival one being the Cape York/Torres Strait Crusaders. The competition was played in two pools, metropolitan and country. The Crusader team travelled to Cairns two days before the carnival to commence training. Unlike the oppositions the Crusaders don’t get to train on a weekly basis in the lead up to State Champs. Two days before Championships players were just getting to know one another.

Day 1 & Day 2
Day one kicked off at Holloways Beach City Cobras Ground for training. The sun already had a bite to it but the students were itching to get their hands on the footy. Like all our Crusader teams the first day together is focused on team building. Team building activities was first to kick off on the AFL ground with much laughter and happiness. Floyd Sailor from Thursday Island was clearly the character of the team and mingled well with his new friends and definitely knew how to break the ice amongst the team. Training was very quiet right up until lunch-time, there was something in the healthy salad rolls that brought out the character in everyone. After lunch, training became more talkative with players like Shaun Law (Cooktown), Laurie Nona (Badu Island), Mena Newman (NPA) came out firing and demanding the footy.

Day 2 proved to be a great day. Preparation of players was outstanding. We headed to the Cobras training facility again to revisit our skills and game play. By 1:00pm the Crusaders were clearly tired and bodies just holding up enough to jump back on the bus and head back to Trinity Beach for recovery. Unlike the U14 Crusaders visit to Trinity Beach the ocean was pretty calm, and the team including coaching staff enjoyed a revitalising time in the water.

The day had come for the U12 Crusader team to play their first game of AFL on the magnificent Cazalys oval. The players had mixed emotions on the travel to the arena, with players about to have their first AFL game in Cairns and at State Level. Butterflies were evident in the players but the laughter and happiness did not stop a courageous group.

Crusader draw:
Saturday June 12th : Crusaders V Northern
Crusaders 2.0 - 12 v Northern 18.18 - 126
Sunday June 13th : Crusaders V Darling Downs
Crusaders 2.1 - 13 v Darling Downs 12.16 - 88
Monday June 14th : Crusaders V Wide Bay
Crusaders 1.0 - 6 v Wide Bay 25.15 - 165
Tuesday June 15th : Crusaders V Capricornia
Crusaders 1.3 - 9 v Capriconia 14.12 - 96
Wednesday June 16th : Crusaders V Peninsula
Crusaders 0.7 - 7 v Peninsula 9.9 - 63

Crusaders played the five games and played with much enthusiasm and energy. Unfortunately Crusaders didn’t win a game but this was not the goal of the trip. The Crusader team won outside of the footy arena. Positive attitudes and leadership values of the team was outstanding. For such a young group the AFL Cape York staff could not comment enough on how the team conducted themselves on excursions and behaviour around the campsite. In the eyes of Coaching staff the Crusader team performed well in terms of Leadership and support for one another. This would no doubt be a memorable trip for the Crusader Players and have now gone back to their respective communities with leadership values and long term friendships. Well done U12 Crusader team on your efforts, the AFL Cape York team will be seeing you soon. See you at school.

U13 WCCT Torres Strait/NPA AFL Crusader Cup Carnival 5th & 6th August 2009

This year's U13 WCCT Torres Strait/NPA AFL Crusader cup carnival was a huge success. The standard of football was fantastic, the behaviour of the students was absolutely first rate and thanks to the help from a number of volunteers/teachers coaches/schools etc it made for a great couple of days. The competition was made up of seven teams (an improvement on last year): Thursday Island Hawks, Thursday Islander Bombers, Sacred Heart Blues, Badu Island, Horn Island, NPA and for the first time Saibai and Dauan brought students over to compete as one team.

The history of the event suggested that Badu Island would be the team to beat as Dave M-J has had them playing fantastic footy for a number of years now. However because of increasing interest in AFL across the Torres Strait, the competition was now more even and more competitive than ever before. While there were a couple of outstanding individual performances, none more so then Derek Inguis's huge goal from about 45 metres against a gale force wind, it was the team work that really stood out. This was highlighted by Badu Island's incredibly selfless style of play, in which they handpassed the ball constantly to team mates and made sure that everybody kicked a goal.

The match would ultimately decide the winner of this year's cup was between the TI Hawks and Badu Island. This game amongst others was held at the Ken Brown Oval at night and was played under lights in front of a very vocal TI crowd. Whilst the spectators may not have understood all the rules of AFL they provided a fantastic and excitable atomsphere for the kids to show off their talents. The game was of the highest standard and in a very close finish the TI Hawks were just that little bit classier in front of goal and ran out eventual winners 7.2.44 to 3.12.30.

The games were all over by Thursday afternoon, after which the presentations were held. Throughout the carnival the coaches and AFL Cape York representatives had been trying to select the best U13 players to represent the region in the WCCT Crusader Cup Championships held in Weipa next month. The criteria for selection was outstanding performance on and off the field

U13 WCCT Cook Cluster Crusader Cup Carnival 5th & 6th August 2009

The U13 WCCT Cook Cluster Crusader Cup carnival started with great enthusiasm. Yarrabah were too strong for the inexperienced but gallant Hopevale. The Djarragun students were still feeling the ill effects of motion sickness from the drive to Cooktown, but they showed no signs of being affected on the field. They were too strong for the Cooktown Tigers, who tried to get some rhythm, to no avail.

Djarragun and Bloomfield battled with Djarragun being well drilled to win the game.

Bloomfield was a good contest for the Hopevale team, with Bloomfield making the most of their opportunities, whilst Hopevale battled hard all game to stay in the contest.

Yarrabah and Djarragun completed the first day with Djarragun being too strong and agile for a flat footed Yarrabah side.

Cooktown and Yarrabah opened proceedings for day 2 with Yarrabah being too skilful for the Bloomfield team. Cooktown then overran a gutsy Yarrabah side. Next saw Hopevale taking on the might of Cooktown, but the enthusiastic Hopevale team was able to conjure up a win. With Cooktown taking on Bloomfield, the game was there for the taking and Bloomfield seemed more desperate for the ball.

The carnival was a great success with the teams having to battle the gusty winds. The players displayed great skills and rewarding attitudes throughout the carnival, which will set them up for a great Championship in Weipa.

Jarara and Graham on behalf of AFL Cape York would like to thank Cooktown State School for allowing us to utilise their venue and Steve Daniel, Shane, Anthony Schmidt, Ian Prest, Tenneille Nuggin, Nicky Gong and all the participating students for making this carnival a great success.

U12 Qld State Primary School Championships - Brisbane 6th - 11th June 2009

Game 1 Crusaders Vs Capricornia

Capricornia fielded it's strongest team for several years and the Crusaders realised they were in for a tough game first up in the Championships. The Crusaders lads were noticeably smaller than the opposition but that didn't deter their effort.

Other than the first quarter the Crusaders were very competitive and more than determined. Although outplayed it was a very encouraging performance.

Game 2 Crusaders Vs Darling Downs

After a slow start to the 1st quarter the Crusaders started to combine some very good passages of play.

Darling Downs took full advantage of the Crusaders slow start and created a good lead.

Didymis Blanket (Captain) and Keanu Nona both from Badu Island were focal points up forwards. Although Darling Downs proved to be the better team of the day it was very encouraging that the Crusaders had several more scoring shots than the opposition.

Game 3 - Rivalry Round Crusaders Vs Peninsula

Traditionally Crusaders and Peninsula have played very close matches and this match was no different for 3 quarters both teams were locked in a close battle with scores being equal at three quarter time.

To Peninsula's credit they never once gave up and kicked two late last quarter goals to give them a 12 point victory. The Crusaders were valent in defeat but with hitting the post on two occasions and kicking the ball back in to play when rushed points were a battle options. Again we had more scoring opportunites which indicated the improvement in the Crusaders.

Game 4 Crusaders Vs Bundaberg Wide Bay

This was always going to be a big challenge. Bundaberg Wide Bay were very strong and well drilled giving our lads a lesson in team work and protecting your team mate.

To the Crusaders credit they never gave up and contested every issues.

Although soundly beaten by Wide Bay the players came off full of smiles and enthusiasm.

Game 5
Crusaders Vs Presidents Team

As like the Crusaders the Presidents team has a limited preparation and seems to improve during each match of the championships.

Again the Crusaders were very competitive in all areas and didn't stop trying until the final siren.
