AFL Cape York is proud to acknowledge the support of our sponsors and supporters.
Back in 1997 the AFL in conjunction with Rio Tinto Mining set aside $25,000.00 for the Development Manager of Northern Queensland to visit remote and isolated Communities to encourage AFL participation. The Northern Queensland program has since grown to an annual budget of $700,000.00. The funding is sourced through AFL Nationally, State and Federal Government Agencies, corporate and local business. Examples of funding agencies that have supported Kickstart include:
Our club has always supported Sunshine Coast charities. Each year we devoted some of our surplus funds to a local charity chosen by the members. In 2007 we decided to create a charity project of our own.
The Reaching Out Project is set up to deliver sporting equipment to remote indigenous communities. Our aim is to extend friendship and goodwill to these communities through our mutual interest in AFL football and sports in general.
Being interested in AFL football we decided to concentrate on footballs, pumps, and related items. In 2008 we launched a self-funded pilot project to see how we could best achieve our aims. We targeted 7 remote communities and sought thorough feedback from each one.
Through the ‘Community Activity Programs through Education’ (CAPE) PCYC program and Senior Sergeant David Bird, we reached out to communities in Hopevale and Wugal Wugal, Mapoon, and Naparanum on the Cape York Peninsular. Through Rick Hanlon, the AFLQ representative in Cairns, we sent equipment to Tagai College on Thursday Island, Bamaga on Cape York, and Abergowie College at Ingham. Rick has continued sending our donations to indigenous communities and schools. Through Belinda Morton of QUT we even got footballs delivered to Elcho Island off the NT coast. More recently we have given footballs and related equipment to the PCYC program and the community on Mornington Island. In 2010 we commenced despatches to Badu Island.
We are now seeking sponsorship for more equipment, and to that end we have set up 3 levels of sponsorship, each graded by the number of footballs sponsored (at $25/football)
Maroon sponsor 1 ball
Blue Sponsor 4 balls
Gold sponsor 20 balls
Sponsorship may be made via a donation or may be offered in kind.
If we can secure enough sponsorship then we can have AFL footballs made to our own specifications, complete with sponsor’s logos. Since starting out we have expanded our range of sporting equipment in attempting to meet specific needs as requested.
Following our successful pilot project in 2008 our club has decided to make this an ongoing project. 2009 has seen deliveries into our 4 main target communities.
We would like to thank all of the companies and individuals that have helped us in running the pilot project. The Brisbane Lions FC have given lots of help with merchandise and general support, Rebel Sport donated lots of gear, Perkins Transport shipped into Elcho Island, and our own members have been very generous.
