AFL Cape York recently held a Coaches course in Weipa for school staff and other organisations to participate in and gain a Level One Coach qualification. In total, 17 participants from the Cape were involved in the course which ran in conjunction with the U11 Development Camp and U13 Crusader Championships held from September 3rd to 7th in Weipa. The coaches course participants were involved in practical coaching sessions where they were able to see firsthand the planning and training principles and assist in training. This was valuable experience as the participants were able to learn the skill technique and instruction along with the structures of training sessions including the ‘why’ and ‘how’ to, of skill development and game sense. The new coaches also had the opportunity to then coach their representative team in games and gain feedback from AFL Cape York staff. This enabled the participants to put what they had learnt throughout the course into practice and also to see the transition from messages at training and linking this into the game.
LakelandState School

Hopevale State School
Over 50 Hopevale ss students have been involved in the early stages of the school based NAB AFL Auskick Program coordinated by AFLCY Development Officers Marc Harbrow and Thomas Holland. The 7 week program will provide training and opportunity to build a team which will participate in the annual Cook Cluster Crusader Cup later in the year. Each week has seen excellent turnouts of students and support from staff. Well done to the students at Hopevale State School.
Cooktown State School

Saibai Island
Paul Koranya ran another successful AFL Auskick Program on Saibai Island up in the Torres Straits. Paul has been a huge support of the Auskick program and has helped develop his students skilling and AFL knowledge. Paul used the AFL Auskick program to select his Saibai Island team to participate and contest the Crusader Cup on Thursday Island in Term 3. Manager Rick Hanlon made comment on the skills of the Saibai boys and how its developed from last year “geez the Saibai boys can play, their game sense wsa great”. Young talent Allan Wosomo is developing fast and by the way he’s going he’s looking to be a athletic ruckmen. AFL Cape York would like to thank AFL coordinator Paul Kuranya on his successful efforts in providing AFL programs for the students on Saibai Island.
Badu Island
Badu Island AFL Auskick program was yet another big turnout. 50 students signing up to play footy and have fun. Well done to Duncan Sweeney who took over the role of 2009 AFL National Volunteer of the Year award. Big shoes to fill but Duncan coordinated the program well and delivering fun AFL drills and games. Rashid Nona a long time participant in AFL Cape York’s Programs is always keen and ready to go for any AFL activity. Thanks to Duncan Sweeney of Badu Island who coordinated the program and has been an AFL coordinator now for 2 years.
Coen
Coen students are always raring to go for AFL Programs. The Auskick program this year was a big hit in Coen thanks to the help of Maureen Liddy who promoted the program well. Coen students also participated in the Western Central Crusader Cup in Aurukun and having 4 students make selection to attend the Crusader Cup Championships in Weipa. Well done to Walter Peter, Sam Zaro, Rebecca Peter and Aima Paii. The students of Coen have showed much interest in the AFL Auskick Program and have showcased development in their skills and knowledge of the Australian Football League game.
The NAB AFL Auskick Program was rolled out in the Cooktown Community in term 1 of school. AFL Cape York received a successful response with 35 participants signing up and ready to play some footy. The program kicked off well despite the Wet Seasons weather bringing heavy rain to make it wet Auskick sessions but this didn’t stop the Cooktown Auskickers getting their hands on the ball. The great part about the program is that parents were down supporting their children and even some participating in some of the activities. Two Cooktown dads Sean Gillen and Cameron Ford helped AFL Cape York staff coordinate the activities during the sessions and bringing enthusiasm and laughter to the Auskickers. In the last week of school AFL Cape York coordinated a parents verse Auskickers game which turned out to be a fantastic hour spent on a Tuesday afternoon. The heavy showers before the session made the ground very sloppy but didn’t deter the Auskickers footy skills and speed. Well done to the Cooktown Auskickers, a great Auskick centre with great Auskickers. Hopevale Auskick |
Auskick Exchange 2009The first weekend of the school holidays was one to remember for year 4 and 6 Thursday Island students Robert Gibuma, Bradley Nixon, Kubby Takai, Floyd Sailor, Nathan Geno and Solomona Nona who travelled to Melbourne to participate in the South Melbourne Junior Football Auskick clinic. The Channel Seven AFL commentary team made a special community visit to give the youngsters a taste of life as AFL stars. AFL legend Leigh Matthews and Brownlow medallist Nathan Buckley took the coaching reins of the two Auskick teams; Lethal's Lot and Buck's Brigade respectively. Veteran broadcasters Bruce McAvaney and Dennis Cometti added to the spectacle by calling all the action from the stands, with Tim Watson on special comments. The trip included two trips to the MCG. On Friday night they saw Essendon play Carlton in front of 83 000 people. Saturday was a bit more special with the kids playing on the hallowed ground at half time in the Collingwood/Freemantle game. Earlier in the year, the South Melbourne Junior AFL club decided to raise money for a cultural exchange for their AUSKICK program. They managed to collect more than $25 000. The exchange will include a return trip by the club to T.I in October accompanied by another AFL legend and face of Auskick Rober "Dipper" DiPierdomenico. Many thanks should go to South Melbourne footy club (and particularly Auskick co-ordinator Scott Carter) for masterminding and funding this exchange as well as organising billets. While some may raise an eyebrow at the money AFL spends, it should be noted that this trip was paid for only through fundraising in Melbourne with a contribution by the families of the kids who attended. It is hoped that the exchange between South Melbourne and Thursday Island becomes an annual event. |
